Knoxville Symphony Orchestra: Masterworks

Knoxville Symphony Orchestra: Masterworks at Tennessee Theatre

Johannes Brahms wrote A German Requiem not for the dead, but for the people left behind. Music Director Aram Demirjian leads the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, soprano Ashley Fabian, baritone Ethan Vincent, and the Knoxville Choral Society in this profound choral-orchestral work at Tennessee Theatre on Thursday, April 15, 2027, at 7:30 PM. If you've ever felt the weight of loss or wanted to offer someone comfort, Brahms built a musical language for that. He set passages from the German Bible that speak to hope, grief, and the shared experience of mourning—comfort expressed through sound.

Brahms chose not to follow the traditional Latin requiem mass. Instead, he created something deeply personal and broadly human. The full forces of orchestra and chorus give his vision the scale it deserves. Joining Brahms on the program are Michael Schachter's Four for Gideon and selections from Randall Thompson's Frostiana, inspired by Robert Frost's poetry. Together, these works explore remembrance, reflection, and renewal—ideas that gain power when heard live.
