The Sound of Music

The Sound of Music at Tennessee Theatre

Maria leaves the abbey. The von Trapp family finds its voice. And somewhere between Do-Re-Mi and Climb Ev'ry Mountain, a spirited nun teaches seven children—and their widowed father—that music can mend what words cannot. The Sound of Music arrives at Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville on Thursday, March 25, 2027, at 7:30 PM. If Rodgers & Hammerstein's score has been part of your life, this is your chance to hear it performed live.

Director Jack O'Brien, a three-time Tony Award winner, brings this production to the Tennessee stage. The songs remain timeless: Edelweiss, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, and the title number offer melodies you've known for years. Watching actors bring Maria's journey to life—choosing love over safety, family over solitude—adds dimension to a story you may have grown up with. The appeal isn't novelty. It's seeing familiar material performed with care.

Bring someone who would value an evening of theater that doesn't demand explanation. A parent who introduced you to the film. A friend whose idea of a good night includes a memorable score. The production has been captivating audiences for decades because its themes—resilience, the power of music, choosing your own path—don't age. Sharing it gives you a reason to gather and a story worth discussing afterward.
