Shovels and Rope

Shovels and Rope at Bijou Theatre - TN

Two voices and the resourcefulness of a duo. Shovels & Rope bring their live duo sound to Bijou Theatre in Knoxville on Thursday, February 11, 2027, at 8:00 PM. If you're drawn to stripped-down music that doesn't hide behind studio polish, this duo offers a reason to listen. Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst write and perform as a married couple, and their chemistry gives you something to watch as much as hear.

Their latest work, Something Is Working Up Above My Head, follows one rule: if they can't play it live as a two-piece, it doesn't make the record. That discipline produces songs built for rooms like this. The album was built around arrangements the duo could accomplish on stage, making resourcefulness part of its musical identity. The music sounds like the life they share: direct, unvarnished, lived-in.

Choose this show if you want an evening that feels more like a conversation than a performance. Bring the person who understands why you'd rather hear two musicians take risks than watch a flawless presentation. The duo's approach gives you a musical reason to choose the evening. February gives you a reason to leave the house on a Thursday and remember why live music matters.
