The short answer

The Old City's music scene centers on three streets. Boyd's Jig & Reel at 101 South Central Street offers Irish pub sessions, Barley's Taproom & Pizzeria at 200 East Jackson Avenue hosts restaurant-style performances, and The Mill & Mine at 227 West Depot Avenue presents touring artists in a standing-room concert hall. Each venue brings a different atmosphere to the neighborhood's compact footprint.

The Old City Music District Layout

The Old City sits just north of downtown Knoxville, where brick warehouses have become dining, art and music destinations. The district's live music venues cluster along three parallel streets that run east-west: Central Street holds Boyd's Jig & Reel, Jackson Avenue is home to Barley's Taproom & Pizzeria, and Depot Avenue hosts The Mill & Mine one block north of the main Old City core. You can walk the entire triangle in under ten minutes, which makes it easy to catch a pub session before dinner, grab a meal with entertainment, or end the night at a ticketed concert.

This walkability changes how you plan a music night. Unlike cities where venues sit miles apart and require advance commitments, the Old City lets you browse what's happening as you stroll. Check calendars before you arrive to see which nights align several performances, then let the neighborhood's compact layout guide your choices as the evening unfolds.

Boyd's Jig & Reel: Pub Sessions on Central Street

Boyd's Jig & Reel at 101 South Central Street brings Irish pub tradition to the Old City music calendar. The venue pairs live music with a pub atmosphere, offering performances that feel closer to a session than a stage show. This is the Old City spot for visitors who want music as part of a social evening rather than a seated concert experience.

Check Boyd's calendar for current offerings, since pub schedules often include weekly sessions alongside special bookings. The Central Street address puts you at the southern edge of the music triangle, a short walk from both Jackson Avenue dining and the larger Depot Avenue concert hall.

Barley's Taproom & Pizzeria: Restaurant Performances on Jackson Avenue

Barley's Taproom & Pizzeria combines live music with a full restaurant and bar at 200 East Jackson Avenue. The venue serves pizza, burgers, chicken dishes, wraps and salads alongside a draft-beer program, with kitchen hours running to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Sunday, midnight Friday and Saturday. Confirm current service times if a meal is central to your plans.

Understanding Barley's as a working restaurant helps set expectations. This isn't a theater with fixed seating; the setup changes depending on the performance. Some shows are free with restaurant access, while others require tickets. A table reservation doesn't automatically include admission to a separately ticketed performance, so confirm the particular show's entry arrangement with the venue before you arrive.

The Knoxville Barley's lists 865-521-0092 for general contact and [email protected] for questions. When asking about an event, provide the artist and date so staff can describe the setup being used rather than a private rental. Use the venue's music calendar for current artist lineups, dates and admission details.

Age policy matters for families planning an evening visit. The house rule limits admission to guests 21 and older after 9 p.m., which affects younger visitors even if they arrive before that hour. Check any additional restrictions on the individual event before making arrangements for guests under 21.

The Mill & Mine: Concert Hall on Depot Avenue

The Mill & Mine sits at 227 West Depot Avenue, one block north of the Old City core and across from the Southern Railway Station. This is the neighborhood's dedicated concert hall, hosting touring artists and themed music nights on an indoor stage with a standing audience area. The venue advertises capacity for up to 1,200 concertgoers, making it the largest music room in the district.

Concerts are standing-room only unless the event page says otherwise. The Mill & Mine also serves weddings and private functions, so don't let photographs of seated receptions or the outdoor courtyard set expectations for concert attendance. Follow the performance's admission details rather than assuming every ticketing includes a seat or courtyard access. The venue identifies an ADA section and asks guests who need seating accommodations to speak with staff on arrival. Contact the venue beforehand at [email protected] if standing throughout a concert would be difficult, so the team can discuss what's appropriate for that event.

Age designations appear on each ticketing page. Unless the event states otherwise, guests younger than 18 may enter an 18-and-over show with a parent or legal guardian. Everyone 18 or older must show valid photo identification. An all-ages performance and an adult-only event should not be treated as interchangeable, so read the designation before making plans for younger guests.

The venue prohibits large backpacks, bags and oversized purses, as well as outside food, drinks and weapons. Security may inspect guests and belongings. Cameras with detachable lenses and professional recording equipment require advance approval, and artist restrictions can be tighter. Concert service includes a bar with alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, plus snacks or lighter food. The published FAQ lists cash and major cards, while the surrounding Old City offers additional meal options before the show.

There is no regular physical box office. Will-call service begins an hour before doors on event day, so distinguish the door time from the performance time when planning your arrival. Check the venue's concert calendar for current lineups and ticketing links.

Parking in the Old City Music District

The Mill & Mine identifies street parking along Depot Avenue and surrounding streets, as well as the public lot beneath I-40 at East Magnolia Avenue and Williams Street. The venue describes that lot as a short walk from the building. Do not use the Blue Slip Winery and Southern Railway parking lot; The Mill & Mine warns that its gate can be locked before concertgoers return. A nearby lot is not necessarily available for concert parking simply because it is close to the entrance.

Contact Barley's Taproom or Boyd's Jig & Reel for current parking advice specific to Jackson Avenue and Central Street. The Old City's compact layout means street parking and public lots serve the entire district, but individual venues can provide the most accurate guidance for their addresses.

Planning a Walkable Music Evening

The Old City's three-street music triangle supports several visit styles. Start with an early pub session at Boyd's Jig & Reel on Central Street, walk one block north to Barley's on Jackson Avenue for pizza and a taproom performance, then end the night at The Mill & Mine's Depot Avenue concert hall if a touring artist aligns with your schedule. Or reverse the order: grab dinner before a ticketed Mill & Mine show, then walk south into the Old City for a nightcap and whatever session is happening at the pubs.

Check each venue's calendar before you arrive to see which nights layer multiple performances. The district's walkability means you don't need to commit to a single venue for the entire evening unless a ticketed concert anchors your plans. Let the neighborhood guide your choices as you move between Central, Jackson and Depot.
